Cuba: Food

Food throughout the trip was really good. Finally we learnt that the cheaper local places or the casas were better than the 'restaurants'. The food in Santa Clara Hotel was ok for dinner but horrible for breakfast and in the Varadero hotel resort was good but nothing to rave about but it was all inclusive. The casa breakfasts were amazing! For $4 you would get fresh fruit, fresh bread, eggs whichever way we liked, freshly squeezed juice (pineapple or mango) coffee, ham and cheese. Peso Pizza was one of our other life lines... more like cheese on salty toast most the time not really pizza, usually very little tomato as its very expensive( a large tin of tomatoes was more expensive than a litre of rum) but it was still pretty awesome and most days our lunch.

Had a couple of funny times at the restaurants... in Santa Clara we ordered a cheese platter (our first meal) for it to come as sliced cheese with brown sauce...,

Found a mc donalds... but no happy meals.

In trinidad the first place we went for food, i ordered vegetable soup and phil ordered a mixed salad... my soup was phils salad in a bowl with some warm water... best stick to the local food...

In Trinidad we went to the restaurant next door to our casa, which only really became a restaurant once we walked in... We were the only people; we were sitting in their garden under a hut with three tables in total. We asked for the menu and the waiter says...”first we talk...what do you like to eat"... there was no menu... this was the start of a hilarious night, in the end he sold us lobster, we weren't hungry so only got one to share... thank god we got 7 plates of food in total! You really don't go under fed in Cuba! We got full plates of mango, mix salad (tomato, cabbage & cucumber) banana fries, sweet purple potato, rice, lobster, some unknown vegetable. We ordered mojitos and waited 10 minutes for it to arrive, whilst we watched the waiter run about in and out of his house to get rum, then to probably go pick the mint leaves and the limes, we gave us our drinks then returned the kitchen then sat back with the chef to enjoy their mojito, half way through the dinner an avocado just missed Philip’s head, then we realised there was banana trees, mango trees and avocado trees, no wonder we were sitting under a hut!

In a restaurant in Havana when we arrived there was only one other couple, then a band came to start and they left, leaving us with our own private band. They were awesome sang accopella style, but such a funny night as they spent the whole night singing and chatting to us.
